Heist, presented by the Arts Club Theatre Company, is making its BC premiere at the Stanley BFL Canada Stage. As the title suggests, this is a crime caper centred around a group of thieves brought together for an ambitious multimillion-dollar ruby heist. But, as you would expect, things don’t go according to plan. As the evening unfolds, the heist becomes increasingly complicated, with shifting alliances, secrets, double-crosses and plenty of questions about who is actually in control.
The real standout is the set design. The projections and use of the stage made the whole production feel remarkably cinematic. If there were any way to make a play look like a movie playing on a screen, this was it. There were literally opening credits on a screen. The projections, lighting and staging worked together to create a visual language that made the production feel much bigger than a traditional stage set. Big, big kudos to the entire set design team.
The play takes time getting to the resolution, but this gives the audience plenty of opportunity to follow the twists and try to work out what is really going on. And the eventual solution was clever and, judging by the reactions from the audience, genuinely surprising.
Charlie Gallant as Marvin commanded the stage every time he was on it. He has the kind of presence that immediately draws your attention. Alexandra Lainfiesta as Angie was another highlight, bringing plenty of energy to the role and showing off some unexpected performance skills that I won’t spoil.
Overall, Heist is an enjoyable evening of theatre. It keeps the audience entertained, keeps us guessing and delivers a few surprises along the way. But the visual design is what really elevates the production. The projections and cinematic staging were genuinely impressive and made this BC premiere well worth seeing.
