I have always enjoyed the various concerts in the annual TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. This year the 26th Annual Jazz Festival takes place at various venues around Vancouver from the Vogue Theatre, Centre for the Performing Arts, Venue Night Club, and many more from June 24 – July 3rd .
Some performances that should not be missed include:
June 25 — Jaga Jazzist -Saturday at 8pm at Venue
Norway-based Jaga Jazzist dissolves boundaries while synthesizing elements of electronica, jazz, dub, and avant-rock into a lush listenable stew that’s all their own.
June 25 – Madeline Peyeroux at 8pm at the Centre for Performing Arts
Stylish and beguiling describes French-American singer/songwriter and guitarist Madeleine Peyroux.
June 27 — Brasstronaut -8pm or 10:30pm —Performance Works
Since forming in 2007, local band Brasstronaut has steadily built a strong following for their eclectic and intricate fine arts pop sound. Incorporating influences as wide-ranging as Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel, and Daft Punk, this up-and-coming outfit creates intriguing and compelling soundscapes that are thrilling and unpredictable.
June 29 —Ana Moura 9:00pm –at the Vogue
Portuguese singer Ana Moura brings her beautiful voice and charismatic stage presence to the Festival for the first time. She has emerged as a leading exponent of her land’s fado style, a poetic, deeply expressive idiom that explores such universal themes as lost love, separation, and longing.
June 30–Bad Plus –9pm at the Vogue
For the past ten years The Bad Plus—Reid Anderson bass, Ethan Iverson piano, and Dave King drums—have broken down the walls of jazz convention and created an uncompromising body of work. The trio draws inspiration from the worlds of pop, rock and country while constructing a distinctly creative jazz idiom all their own.
July 1 Blue King Brown -8pm –at the Vogue
Blue King Brown, Australia’s premier Urban roots crew, are Comin’ to conquer! With the drop of their new record WORLDWIZE Part 1 North & South, (receiving a string of 4 & 5 star reviews across the Nation) they have established themselves as one of Australia’s most engaging, unique & quality acts.
July 3 –Paco de Lucia at 8pm–at the Orpheum
Paco has become a living legend of the flamenco guitar and one of Spain’s ranking musical ambassadors to the world. Heavyweights like Wynton Marsalis, John McLaughlin, and Chick Corea are some of his famous collaborators.
