A Little Night Music is Steven Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, and has been enchanting audiences worldwide since its Broadway debut in 1973. Based on Ingmar Bergman’s comedy of manners, Smiles of a Summer Night, Sondheim collaborated with playwright Hugh Wheeler to adapt the original film into a stunningly sophisticated musical with a timeless score.

Gateway’s presentation of A Little Night Music was envisioned by veteran director, Peter Jorgenson, whose company, Patrick Street Productions has produced award winning shows in the past, including The Light in the Piazza and Rodgers and Hammerstein: Out of a Dream, which was a hit on Gateway’s MainStage during the 2014/2015 season!

Set in Sweden at the turn of the last century, A Little Night Music follows the progressions of infatuation, jealousy and true love as a cast of unforgettable characters meet, couple and uncouple during a weekend at a lavish country estate.

Hilariously witty and heartbreaking in turns, Sondheim’s musical weaves together a tangled web of former and current lovers who do their best to navigate the pathways through adoration, desire and regret.  With a brilliant cast including Warren Kimmel as Fredrik Egerman and Katey Wright as Desiree Armfeldt, the fires of love in its many forms will never burn more brightly than when this new production of Sondheim’s musical tour de force hits Gateway’s Mainstage this October.
