DanceHouse opens its 2011/12 season November 4 & 5, 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse with Canadian dance icon Louise Lecavalier in a program of two duets: Children, choreographed by Nigel Charnock, and A Few Minutes of Lock, choreographed by Edouard Lock.
Children are beautiful, ugly, mad, bad, sweet, annoying, loud and funny—and so is this peice, choreographed by Vancouver favourite Nigel Charnock (Frank, Fever). It’s a bittersweet, sweaty duet that exposes the heaven and hell of a relationship at the breaking point: dark, witty, very physical; like a big, grown-up child. Children is presented with A Few Minutes of Lock, a revisiting of three astonishing duets from Louise Lecavalier’s final years with Edouard Lock’s seminal company La La La Human Steps.
Louise Lecavalier joined Edouard Lock’s La La La Human Steps in 1981, and remained the company’s muse, emblem, guiding light, and principal dancer until 1999. Together, Lecavalier and Lock shaped contemporary dance and forged a unique, complex, and highly physical choreographic language. In 2003 she returned to the stage, working with Tedd Robinson, Benoit LaChambre, and Crystal Pite. She founded her own contemporary dance company, Fou Glorieux, in 2006 to create new work collaboratively with like-minded artists.
Lecavalier’s partners for this two-duet evening are Keir Knight (A Few Minutes of Lock) and Patrick LaMothe (Children). Calgary-born Knight first danced Edouard Lock’s work on the La La La Human Steps European tour of Salt. He also danced with the company in Amelia and Amjad. LaMothe has danced with O Vertigo (seen at DanceHouse last season with La Chambre Blanche). As an independent choreographer, his work has been presented at Tangente, at FInd and Les Printemps de la danse, at the National Circus School in Montreal, by Échine dô, and by the Bravo! Arts channel.
